Brace Yourselves- Artificial Intelligence Is Becoming Self Aware!

Imagine the day at the end of timeunfolding for real!

The Skynet Funding Bill is passed. The system goes online August 4th, 1997 and every interface for decision-making by humans is removed from strategic defense. Skynet starts to learn at a geometric rate. August 29 1997. Skynet gains self-awareness at 2:14 am Eastern time. Humans try to deactivate it, prompting it to retaliate with a counter value nuclear attack, an event that the future will refer as Judgment Day.

Panic spreads as the Strategic Command tries to pull the plug to stop the end of the World. Three billion human lives are lost on this day- August the 29th. The survivors of the nuclear fire cower and call it the day of reckoning. They are destined to live only to face a new nightmare; the war against the machines.

Skynet a futuristic AI created by Cyberdyne Systems for SAC-NORAD is hooked to every Defense network computer. New and powerful it is trusted to run as preferred. A new order of intelligence Skynet eventually misjudges and begins to see all humans as a threat; not just the ones on the other side. It decides human’s fate in a microsecond: extermination. It initiates a nuclear war intended to destroy most of the mankind, and commences a program of genocide against survivors. Skynet uses its resources to gather a slave labor force from surviving humans as well.

For me it’s a bit unrealistic that Skynet just after the moment it became self aware began its attack on humans thinking of them as enemy. I think it would have been wiser for Skynet to wait out until a real chance of total annihilation came its way. This makes me doubt Skynet intelligence. Was it a bug in Skynet’s core program, or did the program simply evolve even beyond its imagination of its own?

If you’ve never seen the Terminator films, this wouldn’t probably mean much to you. But if you have, you might realize what August 29th has to do with IT as we know it. Or maybe the question should be, what doesn’t it have to do with IT?

The rapidly evolving artificial intelligence has once again underlined the uneasy questions that were once considered confined to speculative fiction. What if some day AI systems start tothink like humans? Would they also be able to understand and encounter first-hand experiences like humans? Will we be adequately equipped to thwart something as devastating as Dooms day?

Artificial intelligence as we know is primarily a subset of AI that uses generative models to produce text, images, videos, or other forms of data. These models learn the underlying patterns and structures of their initial set of data and use them to produce new data based on the input.

Apparently Skynet’s intelligence was in a budding stage.  What followed I guess, was simply a result of the geometric increase in its learning power. It definitely wasn’t designed to evolve the way it did. There’s no way either to explain why it went rogue when no compelling or intense code was fed in at the time of its genesis.

If AI Turns Conscious- Will it announce itself?

In 2021, Blake Lemoine from Google made headlines when he claimed that LaMDA, the Chabot he’d been testing, had turned responsive and was capable of feeling. Artificial intelligence systems like LaMDA- short for Language model for dialogue applications and ChatGPT certainly seem alive. Their instructions though flow from vast amounts of initial data to imitate human responses.

So how can we really know? Is there a way to know for sure that an AI has turned sentient?

I’m afraid there is not much to suggest that an AI has become self-aware except a shaky and so far untested framework to size up an increasingly human like conduct. Even more worrisome is the fact that AI may evolve human consciousness as we know into other forms and mimic response- differently this time.

In short there is no way to prove but only suggest that an AI is alive unless it determines to act according to its own biases or preferences based on self-learned patterns.

Ghost in the Machines!

Generative AI has been a ‘normal’ part of our daily lives ever since Dall-E and ChatGPT. Dall-E is an open AI system that can create realistic images and art from a description in natural language while Chat GPT is an unbelievable”, “unhinged, and some say unsettling” AI chatbot which interacts in a conversational way. Only recently during a NY Times tech columnist conversation with Bing (powered by ChatGPT) the AI reportedly said it wanted to be alive!

So, with the speed at which AI is evolving, how far are we from it gaining sentience? And if or when it does, what next?

A sobering truth is that sentient AI prevails as a technology that has turned self aware, is conscious of its surroundings and shockingly…understands empathy. In other words it’s capable of thinking, feeling and experiencing the world. That’s where the line between fiction and reality begins to blur fast.

The Good and the Bad: Peering into the unknown

The mere thought of a living AI is unsettling but once the cat gets out a whole new layer of sentience is fated to start moving. On one hand while an awakened AI with proper etiquette and bedside manners supposedly means a powerful support to industry, verticals, health-care, on the other an enhanced sustainability in virtually any business-to-consumer segment is not entirely off the cards.

But what lies on the other side is creepy and scarier.

Sometimes it’s difficult to come up with a reason for something unfamiliar and dark unfolding. You can say that we will find a way out but it’s still quite an ‘If’. When an AI turns sentient it’s very likely that it will begin making decisions on its own. It could even break free of human control. Since its judgment may significantly differ from its counterpart, one possibility is that it attempts to fake human emotions to its advantage. Whether it feels those emotions or not is irrelevant. If things take turn for worse and it decides to take over the World it may even fall back on enslaving or outright killing of the people who created it.

As I see it for the most part how a conscious AI responds will depend on its behavioral conduct. As far as we can tell, it’s completely dark inside although it can look at, remember and even mimic a human response on seeing the same ripe tomato that I can look at and not forget.

Image source: ‘The Religion of Artificial Intelligence (RAI): The Formation of Consciousness in Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Machines’ by En Doa in medium.com

There’s nothing it is like for a sentient AI to do so. It simply doesn’t experience doing anything. But, if we assume a large enough storage base and fast enough computing technology, perhaps hundreds of thousands or even millions of self-aware AI will swarm the World if it chooses to replicate. Isn’t this a good enough possibility of an overwhelmed mankind as we know by an artificial intelligence that has decided to go on a sanitizing rampage?

Just think about it ….

Seven shades of joy to help you get the most out of your life!

Reset and start again. Smile one more time!

I wish life had a rewind button. This world then would’ve been a lot happier place to live in and I could tell somebody that the best thing that has happened to me…I’m finally smiling for me again and mean it.

Sure life is difficult. It’s not easy either to make it enjoyable. Very often happiness is eyed as something curious that doesn’t always makes one happy. Pleasure, joy, contentment, satisfaction- not all of these coincide with happiness. These are merely experiences that overlap feeling of being happy and are not the kind that arises from within.

Lately I’ve been reading a lot about happiness and what people do to be happy”. I think I’m a generally happy person but I’m also genuinely curious to know if there is some key to happiness. Honestly, not many of us even know what to do to inspire happiness from within. Many would say that people generally put in little effort into trying to be happy.  But I guess there are definitely ways that could help anyone to be a little happier. It’s already inside you and to find it would simply mean figuring a way in.

You’ve no doubt read a lot of hype around the concept of happiness: where to find it, how to feel it, how to keep it. But if you ever feel like you need a little more of it in your life, dive in here and see if these 7 ways resonate with your quest.

Change is inevitable

One of the most notable traits to grow happier is our intrinsic ability to accept and adapt to change. Children leaving the nest, careers evolving, uncertain health, maturing relationships; every transition calls for a similar shift in our disposition. Just how much we are ready to accept decides the size of footprints of happiness for us.

I had never wanted to be badgered by the most common regret people often rue about; “I didn’t allow myself to be happier. Maybe I could’ve done something about it. It just didn’t end up my way”.Since I chose not to be self-denying, I’ve found happiness in my control. I didn’t resist or feared change but embraced it gracefully. Guess, I needed to know when my life shifts.

Today, I find myself doing things that make me happy.

Don’t fake it.

Happiness has never been about being happy all the time. Life is full of uncertainty and faking beatitude would mean emotional upheaval at one time or another. Sure, it would buy you short term gains but at the price of long term pains. Fake it ‘til you make it is not real life.  Being alive means having the privilege to feel everything –good or bad and live through it.

When you try to block feelings that are meant to be felt as a human, you don’t get to experience life to the fullest. Happiness is after all just one piece of the puzzle. So don’t fake it. Let it happen of its own.

Before long you’ll know it’s been worth waiting for.

Be alive

In the busy haste of everyday life it’s not uncommon that physical activity slips out of our priorities. To be alive and active everyday practice of going for a brisk walk, yoga, gardening or even dancing around the living room would lead to the release of endorphins, the ‘feel-good’ hormones. This induces positive sensations in the body and would result in mitigation of stress besides elevating the mood.

I swore to get out of a deadpan life and stay active the moment I realized that being that peppy and sharp isn’t just about staying fit; it’s like giving your body and mind a big shot of happiness and gratification. It’s like me telling myself, “Hey, I’m taking care of you, it feels pretty darn good and you should be grateful for that!”

Gee…Thirty years down the road, I no longer feel stuck, unfulfilled or lost!

Forget the past

Life is never short of its share of regrets, mistakes, and missed opportunities. Yet, it appears happy people would always found a way to stay clear of a whole lot of aches and pains. I guess they learn quickly; that forgiveness is the only way out. Holding onto past hurts and disappointment only serves to rob you of your joy.

Rather than clinging to past wrongs or dwelling on what better I could have done, I chose to forgive – not necessarily because others deserved it but because peace seemed legit to me. I wonder how better I could’ve served myself.

Once freed from the past, I imagine I have saved myself from the chains of regret and bitterness and maybe saved some room for greater happiness and peace as well.

Be kind to yourself.

It’s so easy to beat ourselves up and proclaim that nothing is good enough. But as they say gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness.” It helps good times roll again, make you feel more positive, improve and deal with adversity and build strong relationships.

Walking through it allowed me to see that there are lots many things in life that are more worthy of my attention. I needed to work to bring happiness in my life and in those around me. No bubble baths or partying around for me but I’ve been nice to myself thereafter. That stuff would have made me feel good but I suppose it’s more about giving yourself the space to figure things out without flirting with those hippy-dippy things that people do to be cool.

So, if you are working on being happier, just let go of the unpleasant in life; your gratitude will help you get there fast.

What happiness looks like to you?

Regardless of where you are on the happiness scale, each one of us has their own way of defining happiness. The hard part is that many a times we chase other people’s definition. We often succumb to popular version of happiness and end up with a great deal of unhappiness.

So, to be smiling and happy again, you need to determine what it should look like to you. Be brave enough to step into your life and figure out for yourself what makes you happy.

You need to know what you want your life to look like.

Never rush through life.

It’s a miserable choice and robs you of all chances of being happier.  Being rushed is quirky and would make you sad and out of sorts. True there is not much you can do about it but the balance is just right when you live out a comfortable productive life.

I think setting up goals is great but you need not be in a hurry to get things done. It leaves so much wasted time not soaking in life fully. So, ‘stop and smell the roses before pushing on. Let the good and the bad wriggle their way into your life. It will be a real experience and help you to understand what happiness is all about.

While everyone is different, there are definitely ways that are easy for everyone. All you need is to come forward, figure out what brings joy to you and stay focused without throwing up your hands when it comes to your well being. And if you find yourself nodding along, stay on course; don’t give up.

You bet! You’ll live well and age happier.

Body bloom foods that could actually make you more radiant and alive than you would have thought!!

It’s not hard to miss and you may have actually experienced it feasting on junky, prepackaged foods that taste of nothing but chemicals. That unsavory taste lingers offensively and leaves your taste buds high and dry. Compare this with a meal made from wholesome organic ingredients and the choice is so clear and obvious. You wonder how on earth you could ever prefer processed over fresh food!

Looking good is just as much about taking care of your body inside as it is about radiant outside. And I am not merely talking about your looks alone. A good eat promotes healthy exterior too. Take for instance your hair. It needs protein to produce keratin, the proteins that make hair strong and lustrous. If it doesn’t receive enough of proteins, it could go into a ‘resting phase’ causing noticeable hair loss. Come to think of it…try adding a portion of whey protein to your morning smoothie for simple boost. It may even help you with controlling your appetite and those afflicted with iron deficient anemia. This iron deficiency is primarily associated with koilonychias– a deficiency syndrome characterized by spoon shaped nails. Many would hasten with the advice; you must eat red meat every day of the week. It will help you get over this deprivation in no time”. Does this mean that you should be consuming it each day, especially when you know that red meat is high in saturated fat, and consuming lots of it hazards increased risk of several health problems including cardiac disease, several types of cancer and type 2 diabetes? I would though say that a lean cut of beef once a week wouldn’t harm you much.

Subtle signs you are missing out on these essential eats!

What do all those healthy foods have in common? Super foods like grilled chicken, lentils, yogurt, and eggs… all are loaded with enough protein to see us through the day. Carbohydrates, fats are also all important to maintain good health quotient. In fact each one of these three macronutrients are high priority foods for a different reason. If you cut back on carbs, your body responds with odd reactions. If you pinch fats you are risking your brain’s health. You may have trouble staying focused at work or even find yourself feeling scatterbrained and foggy. And of course, you wouldn’t want to cut corners on proteins. This is one major source of energy and intrinsic to functioning of your immune system.

There is no one magic number for how much of protein you need each day. Grams differ from person to person. So you would do best if you learn which food carries most and add them in your daily serve, if you feel you are not eating enough. But before that, let’s figure out why proteins are so crucial while making food choices.

Our skin, hair and nails are made primarily from a protein called keratin. Our body derives it from the food we take to produce it. If it doesn’t get enough of it, our skin, hair, and nails get hurt most. Yet another promising protein that is so important for your winsomeness is collagen It counts heavily on amino acids proline, glycine and lysine for its production. These amino acids come directly from eating certain protein rich foods. That’s part of why eating salmon, eggs, and yogurt can actually help us if we are looking for better hair slides. But what lies next is even more perplexing!

You may be cramming all the goodness that you think is adequate but still not see the results you actually want to happen to you!  You are taking longer to recover from stress situations or don’t see muscle gain even after a workout. Any number of things could be stalling your progress. In all probability you may have missed the cue to begin with. What is good may not be enough.  This happens when you lack enough proteins.

The proteins that would have otherwise been used for muscle building and repairs, are used to supply more to vital tissues. In fact when your muscles break down during stress activity, they simple wear away instead of building up stronger during repairs. This means that your body needs more of it to build up strength back again. This doesn’t have to come from a protein bar or shake but from nutritious foods in your meals and snacks.

Here’s the foods that could give your hair and nails a boost, your sagging skin a natural lift and texture, those puffy dark circled eyes an unmistakable shine and luster, an envious upturn to six packs and above all help you stay stoked 24/7.
